Eclipse Chasing in the Great Sand Sea
Egypt 2006

We started our tour in Cairo before heading to the mediterranean coast at the border of Egypt and Libya for the total eclipse. We then continued through the deep desert along the oasis route back to the upper nile to see Luxor and Aswan. The pyramids and antiquities are truly spectacular but for me, nothing compared to the experience of the eclipse and the deep desert. The hot air balloon over Luxor was truly magical too.

The government had set up an eclipse camp outside Salloum for a few thousand idiots like us as there were no facilities in the somewhat remote and militarized area. The weather was perfect for totality.

Our trip through the desert was made more surreal by the personal shadow military vehicle full of soldiers which followed us at a discreet distance for the entire journey, presumably for our protection.
